Step-By-Step
First, prepare your workspace and gather everything you need. Gather the punch cups. A tip is to put the cups on a cookie sheet, and then it will be easier to transport the dip cups when you are done assembling them.
Also, if you are making homemade guacamole or salsa, now is the time to get that done before you start assembling the cups.
Layer the refried beans. Open the can of refried beans and stir them for a smooth consistency. It is usual for the liquid to seep to the top, so don’t worry about that. This is why we need to stir it. You can stir in the can or transfer the beans to a bowl, that is probably easier.
Spoon 2 tablespoons of the beans into the bottom of each cup and smooth it out with the back of a spoon. Rinse your spoon or grab a new one.
Tip: Slightly warming the beans in the microwave first will make them easier to smooth and spread.

Add the guacamole. Add 2 tablespoons of guacamole on top of the refried beans and smooth it out with the back of a spoon or small spatula.
If you want to make a simple version of guacamole, you can create your own by mashing two large avocados with salt, garlic powder, and lime juice to taste.

Add the sour cream. Spoon 2 tablespoons of sour cream over the guacamole layer. Be careful with this one because it is easy to mix the two layers. Use the back of a clean spoon or a clean, small spatula.

Add the salsa. Spoon 2 tablespoons of chunky salsa on top of the sour cream. A tip is to drain excess liquid from the salsa here. A chunky salsa does much better for this recipe than a thinner, runny salsa.
Tip: If you prefer a runny salsa, it would be best to put it on top of the guacamole and add the sour cream to the salsa.

Add the cheese. Next, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of cheese on top of the salsa layer.

Add toppings. Finish with the toppings of your choice. Consider mixing and matching toppings for different flavors in the cups. Also, layer the toppings if you want to add extra flair.
Serve with tortilla chips on the side! Consider garnishing with a sprig of cilantro or a small wedge of lime.
Tips and Tricks
Keep the guacamole beautiful. To keep your guacamole green and lovely, ensure the sour cream layer covers it entirely. The lack of air exposure will keep it from turning brown. This one tip will allow you the freedom to prep this recipe ahead of time.
Get creative with toppings. You can drizzle the top with hot sauce. You can dice up bell peppers for added crunch and color. Chopped cilantro will add a bright pop of flavor and color. If you are brave, you can add various hot pepper slices on top, too.
Make the salsa chunky. If your salsa is runny, consider straining it with a fine-mesh sieve or colander lined with a paper towel. If you prefer it to be runny, place the salsa below the sour cream layer.
Cup size matters. For smaller servings, use a 5-ounce cup and adjust the layers accordingly. Part of the charm of this recipe is that it is served in small servings.
Make Ahead with Care. These dip cups are best served fresh, but they can be prepared up to a day in advance. Store them covered in the refrigerator, and add toppings just before serving to maintain their freshness.
