Burger King Japan’s New Rice Whopper Gets Mixed Reviews—Is It Good?

People had different takes.

You think you’ve seen it all when it comes to fast food, but then Burger King Japan goes and drops a Whopper with rice patties. That’s right—rice in a burger.

When Burger King Japan made an official announcement in late October about the release of the new burger on November 1, it sparked conversations online, with fans and critics sharing their thoughts after trying it.

For those who don’t know, the Japan-exclusive KYOTO Whopper features a beef patty, a rice patty made from white and Kin no Ibuki brown rice, lettuce, tomato, and onion, all topped with a ginger sauce made from soy sauce, dashi, and spices like chili pepper and ginger.

The new burger has caused quite a stir on social media. TikTok and YouTube are flooded with reactions from people reviewing the burger, either praising or questioning the flavor mix.
TikTok user @legitkorea called it “one of the best burgers I’ve ever had” and mentioned being surprised by how good it tasted, although he rated it “6.89/10.”

YouTuber Kevin and Cat Travel praised the sauce’s flavor, noting the pronounced umami from the soy and ginger. He added that the rice patty had a “neat texture” and concluded, “You know what? It works. Kudos to Burger King for making this monster.”

However, YouTuber ONLY in JAPAN GO had a different take, saying, “That’s not worth it. This is so geared towards Japanese tourists coming here to Japan.” He felt the rice overpowered the burger, adding, “I can’t even taste the burger… I taste rice and bread… the meat is like a garnish.”

While people had mixed reactions, the question remains: For you, does the KYOTO Whopper’s rice patty add something special, or is it just a gimmick that doesn’t work for everyone?
