How To Make Christmas Pretzel Rods

Ingredients:

  • Pretzel rods
  • White chocolate pieces
  • Cooking oil or coconut oil
  • Festive sprinkles (two colors)

For the sprinkles, I choose round, flat red, and flat green sprinkles. You can use as many variations and colors as you would like.

Choosing the Right White Chocolate for Dipping

We have experimented with and tested melting white chocolate chips and white chocolate chips for recipes like these. There are some significant differences to consider.

Here’s why white chocolate pieces are the better choice for this recipe:

  • White Chocolate Chips: These are designed to hold their shape when baked, making them less ideal for melting. Even when melted, the chips can be thicker and more challenging to work with, which may lead to clumpy or uneven coating on the pretzel rods.
  • White Chocolate Pieces: Often sold as baking bars or melting wafers, these are specifically formulated for smooth melting. They create a thinner, more fluid consistency that coats the pretzel rods evenly and makes decorating easier.

If you only have white chocolate chips, you can still use them, but consider adding a little more cooking oil (about one teaspoon per cup of chips) to help them melt more smoothly.

By opting for white chocolate pieces, you’ll achieve that perfectly smooth, shiny coating that makes these pretzel rods delicious and picture-perfect for the holidays!

Step-By-Step

Step 1: Set up your workspace.
Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. Pour your sprinkles into individual bowls or small plates for easy dipping. We found it easier to roll the chocolate-dipped pretzel rods in a small plate of sprinkles.

Step 2: Melt the white chocolate.
Combine the white chocolate pieces and cooking oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second increments, stirring after each until smooth and melted. We poured our melted chocolate onto a small plate. Choose whichever you find easier for you to use.

Step 3: Dip the pretzel rods.
Hold one end of each pretzel rod and dip the other end into the melted chocolate, coating it halfway. Let any excess chocolate drip off.

Step 4: Add sprinkles.
Immediately roll the chocolate-covered portion of the pretzel rod in the sprinkles or sprinkle them on by hand. Place the decorated pretzel rod on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 5: Let the chocolate set.
Allow the pretzels to cool and the chocolate to harden by placing the baking sheet in the fridge for 10–15 minutes.
