The 4th of July is basically a national excuse to eat outside all day, and we’re here for it. That said, I’m also here for the air conditioning, so here’s a mix of party food recipes in a slow cooker and some are hot off the grill. Finger foods, sweets, dips, and more.

Whether you’re hosting a full backyard cookout or just bringing a dish to someone else’s party, the food makes the fun. Burgers and hot dogs are great, but a really good 4th of July party food spread can go beyond the grill.

It’s time for paper plates and a hand over your heart for these 4th of July party food ideas worth making this summer.

This patriotic charcuterie board is loaded with crowd favorites, arranged in red, white, and blue, and costs way less than you might think. Tomatoes, cheese, chips, crackers — whatever you have on hand artfully arranged to suit.

Avocado Deviled Eggs

Avocado Deviled Eggs

Avocado in the eggy filling helps add richness without so much mayo. A nice twist on the classic.

BBQ Kielbasa Appetizer

Glazed BBQ kielbasa in a bowl with parsley.

A level up from lil smokies, this hearty, easy appetizer is perfect for keeping hungry guests happy while the grill heats up.

Smoked Cream Cheese Dip

Smoked Cream Cheese Dip

Serve with crackers, spread on sandwiches, or stuff into peppers. Start with softened cream cheese and mix in seasonings by hand. I used Everything Spicy from Flavor God, but any garlic-heavy blend works great. Liquid smoke adds that deep flavor without needing the time or fuss in an actual smoker!

Beer Cheese Dip

Beer Cheese Dip

Ready for a warm dip? This one has the hoppy goodness of beer with cream cheese and fresh cheddar melted smooth on a stove top or slow cooker. Dip all your favorites like pretzels (soft or hard), crackers, or tortilla chips.

Slow Cooker Queso

Queso dip with fresh cilantro and a side of tortilla chips.

With ONLY 5 minutes of prep, you can whip up this guaranteed crowd-pleaser for your next game day or party. The slow cooker does all the work, keeping the dip warm and ready to serve. Prefer it mild? No problem—reduce the peppers. Want to turn up the heat? You know what to do. Either way, this dip is sure to steal the show!

Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Throw the pork in the slow cooker in the morning and forget about it until party time. By the afternoon, you’ve got tender, saucy pulled pork ready to pile onto buns. It feeds a crowd without you standing over a stove, which is exactly what you want on a holiday.

Tequila Lime Grilled Shrimp

Tequila Lime Grilled Shrimp

This one has been on the site for a long time and it hasn’t seen enough love from our readers. I’m here to change that. You’ll get a nice “margarita” vibe from the marinade, without the alc. Plan for four shrimp per person.

4th of July Potato Salad

This potato salad is a classic for July 4th cookouts. Use pantry ingredients or fresh herbs to your liking. It makes a great side dish that pretty much goes with everything. (Though don’t make a pie out of it or anything.)

4th of July Coleslaw

4th of July coleslaw in a white bowl topped with blueberries, parsley, and American flag picks

I love cole slaw now that I’m an adult; it just wasn’t something that appealed to me until I really started to like veggies. This one is mildly sweet with a little less mayo than is usual. The blueberries add the blue part of the festive equation, but you don’t have to use them. Tiny flags, though, make it real.

Mexican Street Corn Pasta Salad

I’ve been adding corn to everything lately: noodles, pizza, you name it. (Greater cooks than I have figured this out sooner than I have.) I think you’ll love the elote flavors (corn, cotija, chili, lime) tossed with pasta. You can make it spicy or not (for me, it’s a not, but I include fresh jalapeno measurements if you are so inclined). Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Watermelon Feta Salad

Watermelon Feta Salad

This salad surprised me because i’m not necessarily the biggest watermelon fan. It has a place at picnics and whatever, but it’s the salty feta and dressing that got my attention. It’s refreshing, light and goes with everything you’ll be eating this 4th of July.

Grilled Pineapple Rings

Grilled Pineapple Rings

I beg of you to slice up some fresh pineapple, bathe them in a brown sugar and butter baste and set them on the grill to make the world’s most perfect char. These are the poster child for “dessert appetizer.”

Patriotic Blue Pretzel Rods

Patriotic Blue Pretzel Rods

Pretzel rods dipped in blue chocolate and decorated with blue sprinkles are fun, easy and just a little messy. (The fun kind of messy, not the “took me forever to do all the dishes” messy.) They look festive and are so easy, kids will be happy to help. They’re also doing double duty as both a snack and a dessert table showpiece.

Patriotic Rice Krispie Treats

Patriotic Rice Krispie Treats

A no-bake 4th of July dessert that’s super easy. Get the packaged krispie treats from the store, and either color your own blue frosting or grab a container, then add sprinkles, jimmies and nonpareils to your heart’s content.

Easy 4th of July Fruit Pizza

Here’s a big, soft sugar cookie crust topped with cream cheese frosting and fresh berries laid out in classic red, white, and blue style. It will be tempting to cram the top with berries but…okay, go ahead, make it your own!

Red, White, and Blue Cheesecake Salad

Don’t let the word “salad” fool you. This is a creamy, dreamy, no-bake dessert loaded with strawberries, blueberries, and a cheesecake-flavored whipped filling. It takes 10 minutes to make, about an hour to set, and tastes like everything you love about cheesecake.

Red, White, and Cool: Rice Krispies Ice Cream Sandwiches

A festive display of red, white, and blue Rice Krispies ice cream sandwiches.

Rice Krispies treats meet ice cream — they come out of the freezer and stay just a bit chewy with a little time to thaw. The sprinkles and ice cream are messy and drippy and they are wonderful treats to enjoy outdoors for kids of all ages.

Strawberry Blueberry Pretzel Salad

A beautifully styled full view of the Strawberry Blueberry Pretzel Salad.

I think this one started getting popular in the midwest: the salty, crisp, buttery pretzel crust, the creamy cheesecake layer and that slightly gelled strawberry top. All that fresh fruit is just a bonus, but what a dream to eat.

4th of July Strawberry Lemonade

4th of July Strawberry Lemonade

Homemade strawberry lemonade that’s sweet, tart, and the prettiest shade of pink. Serve it in a big pitcher with ice and let people help themselves all afternoon. It’s easy to make a huge batch, and you can always add a splash of vodka for the adults-only version.

Layered Jolly Rancher Shot

Bright and colorful layered Jolly Rancher shots, ready to enjoy at a party.

For the grownups only, this deep red and blue shot deserves a show off of its vibrant layers. Watermelon Pucker and blue curaçao come together with the chewy-style sour Jolly Ranchers candy.

Soju Cape Cod

Soju Cape Cod

Thirsty for a twist? This 3-ingredient soju Cape Cod—bright red, tangy, and ice-cold—mixes up in minutes for a Korean vodka kick. Double up on the recipe and make a pitcher for the adults to serve themselves indoors or out.
