I am always in search of a new smoothie recipe. Smoothies are one of my absolute favorite breakfast ideas.
Now, I will admit that sometimes I take a break purely because I get tired of cleaning up the smoothie blender.
Most people think that I a health junkie when they hear how often I have smoothies. That is a great thought but it isn’t always true.
A smoothie can be a dessert in a glass. A smoothie recipe can also be very green and healthy as well. It really depends on what kind of mood you are in that day.
There are a few healthy ingredients that I put in almost every smoothie that I make. We will cover them in a bit.
Hopefully, you will scan this article and find inspiration. There are countless recipe combinations for good smoothie recipes.
Making the best smoothie really comes down to a few things. First, don’t stress about making the perfect smoothie.
Tips on making smoothies
- Use what you have on hand. If you have some bananas and some frozen berries in the freezer go to town.
- If your bananas are about to turn, peel them, break them into chunks, and freeze them.
- There is no wrong way to make smoothies. The key factor is to make sure that it isn’t too thick. You don’t want to have to eat it with a spoon. It is meant to drink. So if it is too thick add in some milk or water. I tend to thin mine out with water just to get a bit of it introduced to my day.
- Smoothies are a great use of beets. They are a wonderful natural sweetener when mixed with fruits and vegetables. They also add a nice color.
- Keep lots of cucumbers on hand. They help add nutrients but they also help thin out the smoothie and keep them from being overly thick.
- Be sure to wash your fruit and vegetables before adding them to the blender. Something about blending all of this together can really bring out the grit if they are dirty.
The foundation of my delicious smoothie recipe
All of my delicious smoothies start with at least a combination of these ingredients. If I run out of something, I don’t let it keep me from making my yummy smoothies.
Beet root powder – Beets are super healthy and as I said earlier, add a bit of sweetness. However, I am not a fan of them overall so I have found that this powder is a great way to work them into my diet.
Also, cutting up beets is quite messy so even when I buy fresh beets at the store, I find myself avoiding it.
Pea protein – I went through a lot of taste testing and experimenting before I figured out a good protein powder that I liked for my shakes. I can drink this powder with almond milk and be happy. It is just that good.
Vital reds powder – A tiny tiny bit of this goes a long way.
Athletic greens – This stuff is pricey so I only use a little bit but it is a good way to work in greens no matter if I make a fruity smoothie or a veggie smoothie.
Lions mane mushroom powder – I add about a tablespoon of this to my smoothies.
Chia seeds – Now Chia seeds are a bit high maintenance. It is important to soak these in water before mixing them into your smoothie.
So what I do is pour some chia seeds in a container with a lid and then fill it with 10X the amount of water. Then I put the lid on it and place it in the fridge. It soaks overnight and then I use that container of chia all week long.
After I add in these powders, I then fill the blender with whatever fruit and vegetables that I have on hand.

Are smoothies better with milk or water?
When it comes to whether smoothies are better with milk or water there are no wrong answers here. It truly comes down to preference. Smoothies with cows milk or nut milk such as almond water tend to be richer and creamier.
However, if your smoothie is thick, adding water can help thin it out and make it more drinkable. Our suggestion is to try both options and experiment with what works best for you.
Do you put ice in a smoothie?
You do not have to put ice in a smoothie. If you are using frozen fruit, for example, ice may be too much. It is a pure preference for adding ice or not adding ice to your smoothie.
We tend to add ice to our smoothies because we like them to be a bit thicker. Generally, we will add 1 cup of ice for each cup of water.
