Ooo Halloween may only come around once a year, but if you make it last two months, that will give you and your family plenty of time to enjoy these Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats!
I was honestly, genuinely shocked by the taste when I took a bite.
It surprised all of us, and our dinner party guests, and even the neighbors.
You are probably already familiar with the chewy, sweet, marshmallow joy of Rice Krispies Treats, but add icing, and these taste really, really good.
And I don’t even know why.
Sure I love sugar as much as the next guy, but I think we were all pretty shocked at the taste combination.
It’s a bit like that moment when you don’t think you need an iced brownie, until you take a bite and then you realize most brownies are super good with icing on them.
Would I have thought of this prior to today? Nope.
Tabitha, our food stylist, used to work in daycare long ago, and she made these for her classroom.
Disappear from the platter, they did … like ghosts! 👻
These easy treats start with a box of those pre-wrapped Rice Krispie treats, which leave you with all of the fun, and none of the stress.
Gather a few things like your box of ready-made treats, a package of twizzlers, a tube of black writing gel, and some googly eyes, and the rest is just a few minutes of fun with your kids.
So…take a bite out of Frankenstein’s head and make it a happy Halloween!

- If you can’t find green frosting at the store, you can color your own icing by mixing 30 drops of green food coloring into one cup of a store-bought can of white icing. (Check out this great frosting-to-coloring ratio chart from Food Network if you want to lighten that green up a bit.)
- Because you are working with green and black icing, we highly recommend that everyone helping with this one wear an apron or a smock to help avoid accidents and messes that could stain clothes.
- You CAN make your own homemade rice krispie treats instead of buying the packaged kind, but homemade tends to be less uniform in size with a bumpy top. That said, homemade could add to the “monster” quality of these fun snacks.
- Use the clean kitchen towel to lay the spatula and butter knife down when not in use (helps with cleanup).

Steps to make these fun Halloween Party Treats
- Gather your tools and ingredients. Make space in your refrigerator or freezer to hold your pan or two plates level.
- Stir the green icing to help soften it.
- Place parchment paper on the baking sheet.
- Unwrap each treat and lay them out on the sheet.
- Using a butter knife or offset spatula, use the green frosting to frost just the tops of each krispie treat. Set aside.
- Gently massage the black writing gel with the cap on. Set aside.
- Unravel a twizzler so that it separates into segments for the lips (see photos).
- With the cutting board and knife (a butter knife should cut the twizzlers fine if you want to pass this task to your child), cut approximately 1-inch lengths of Twizzler segments. Set aside.
- Assemble the eyes, if using, or use the black gel to start drawing on two eyes, nose, and hair at the top of each treat. (See photos.)
- Add the “lips” last, pressing each 1-inch Twizzler segment under the nose. Don’t stress if something isn’t going on right. He’s a monster, after all.
- If there isn’t enough room in your fridge, carefully transfer the “monsters” to two plates so the black icing will set, as it tends to run. Leave for about half an hour undisturbed in the fridge, or 10 minutes in your freezer.
