What to eat with hummus: 10 delicious ideas

We are all on the hunt for things to eat with hummus. Yes, pita chips or naan is AHmazing with it but eventually, we all get curious.

What else can we eat with hummus? How can we cook with hummus?

Hummus is an extremely versatile spread that can be enjoyed in many different ways and it’s incredibly easy to prepare.

All you need to do is blend some chickpeas, garlic, tahini, lemon juice and olive oil in a food processor until a thick, creamy paste has formed.

Ok maybe there is a wee bit more to it than that. Check out our hummus recipe to see our take on the subject.

In this blog post, we’ve prepared a list of some amazing ways to enjoy hummus and a few tips on how to serve it so it looks just as appetizing as it tastes.

You will be amazed at what tastes good with hummus.

What to Eat with Hummus

1. Vegetables

If you’re trying to eat healthily but can’t convince yourself to eat vegetables as they are, you can try pairing them with hummus and turn an otherwise boring meal into something you wouldn’t want to say no to.

Veggies are seriously some of the best things to dip in hummus.

The vegetables can be anything from sliced peppers, radish, celery, cucumbers to broccoli florets and cauliflower.

Veggies are the most healthy things to dip in hummus without feeling like you are being healthy. My favorite veggie with hummus is radishes.

2.Fruit

If you enjoy eating apple slices with peanut butter, you should definitely try them with hummus.

It makes for the most delicious pairing of sweet and savory flavors that’s incredibly difficult to resist.

So if you are curious about what to eat with hummus besides pita, seriously consider fruit. Depending on the season we will try all varieties of fruit.

Right now we are eating pear slices with hummus.

Generally a sturdy fruit that is crunchy goes good with hummus but you can spread it on softer fruits as well. I do recommend staying away from melon and hummus.

That doesn’t sit right with us but beyond that, give it all a whirl.

3. Chips and Bread

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying hummus the traditional way.

Chips and bread are the perfect vehicles for hummus and add the much-needed crunch to supplement the creaminess of the spread.

If you’re wondering what goes with hummus other than pita chips and toasted bread, here are some great options that are worth considering:

  • Rice Crackers
  • Bagel chips (⭐️ best chips with hummus)
  • Pretzels
  • Tortilla chips
  • Falafel
  • Crispy garlic bread

When it comes to chips to eat with hummus what we recommend is that you stay sturdy and crunchy. You are likely noticing a theme here.

When it comes to dipping in hummus, you need something that can hold up to the thickness of hummus.

It is so frustrating when you dip that perfect chip in hummus and then it breaks off.

4. Salad Dressing

Instead of drenching your salads in the same old oils and sauces, you can make it thick and creamy by using hummus as a salad dressing.

If the consistency is too thick for your liking, you can try thinning out your hummus with a little bit of olive oil and water until it gets to the consistency of a creamy salad dressing.

Sprinkle it with salt and pepper to taste before mixing into your salad.

5. Sandwich Spread

Instead of using mayonnaise as a spread in your sandwiches and wraps, it’s time you tried something new.

Hummus can be the perfect addition to your favorite turkey sandwich as the nutty flavors are known to work surprisingly well with turkey slices.

6. Pizza Sauce

There are truly no rules you need to follow when it comes to pizza toppings.

If you love hummus and are always looking for new ways to enjoy it, you should try using it as a pizza sauce.

All you need to do is spread some creamy hummus instead of marinara sauce over a pizza crust and top it with fresh vegetables like bell peppers, spinach, and cucumbers. You can even sprinkle some feta cheese on top.

7. Marinade

You can also use hummus as a marinade on fish, chicken, and even vegetables to give them a boost of flavor.

Simply marinate your meat or vegetables in hummus before cooking them.

8. With Pasta

You can also toss it into a big bowl of your favorite pasta salad. I’d suggest using cold hummus from the fridge to make sure the cooked pasta can cool down a lot quicker.

Hummus with pasta is an easy way to end up with a vegan dinner.

If you are looking for an alternative to alfredo sauce and pasta, then whip in some creamy hummus with sauteed onions and sauteed garlic. Consider also adding in spinach and cooking it until it wilts.

Another delicious way to use hummus is to serve it with pierogies. Cook up the pieorogies, we love to use frozen ones, with chunks of bacon and garlic.

Then thin out the hummus a bit with olive oil to make it thin and creamy.

Then mix it all together with a piece of crispy garlic toast. With that quick effort, you will have an amazing meal.

9. Add to avocado toast

I love avocado toast. Sometimes we buy a small bag of avocados from Aldi and when we do, I get excited because this means avocado toast. Honestly, I am bit fanatical about it.

It turns out that avocado tastes good with hummus. Start by toasting your bread. We recommend that you use a delicious nutty bread that is fresh.

Then spread the hummus on the bread. Slice your avocado and place the slices on top of the hummus.

Drizzle fresh lime juice atop the avocado. Finish it with some fresh cracked pepper.

10. Add hummus to mashed potatoes

I love creamy mashed potatoes. The creamier the better. Loaded mashed potatoes are delicious as well. Now, here is a new twist on what to eat with hummus.

Add hummus to your mashed potatoes.

Instead of adding sour cream or milk, add hummus. Just add it like you would milk and mix to combine.

It will be delicious, unique and your family will be asking you what you did differently this time.

How to Serve Hummus

Instead of serving your hummus as it is in a bowl, you can adorn it with your choice of toppings to make it look just as delicious as it tastes.

Let’s take a look at some tips on how to serve hummus.

  • Spread it in a shallow bowl and use the back of a spoon to flatten it. Try to create the shape of a circle. Use the tip of the spoon to make swirls on the surface while rotating the plate in the opposite direction. This will give hummus the look of a frosting.
  • Drizzle a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil over the swirls in the hummus and sprinkle some paprika on top to give it a beautiful hint of color.
  • You can also add some chopped parsley, diced pickles, or a little bit of jarred caponata on top to make it look all the more irresistible.

Final Words

Now that you’ve learned all the different ways you can enjoy hummus, there’s truly nothing stopping you from getting out of your comfort zone and making hummus a regular part of your diet.

You can pair it with falafel or crackers, mix it into your salad and pasta dishes, and even use it as a pizza sauce, the possibilities are endless.

Don’t forget to add your choice of spices or herbs on top to give it a pop of color before serving.
