A fresh 2025 survey of 2,000 U.S. adults (evenly split across Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers) reveals what we already know: phones are social life’s new third wheel. Sixty‑five percent say people use their devices to “fill space” during real‑life moments, and a whopping 79 % of Gen Zers admit to fake‑texting just to dodge chatting with someone nearby. Meanwhile, 69 % confessed they use their phones to avoid making eye contact; 68 % said they tap their screens instead of talking to a stranger. Over half (63 %) feel the digital age has cut back on actual nights out, and 54% notice we’ve traded small talk for scrolling over the past five years.
