Three recent FDA recall notices involve frozen waffles, hamburgers, and deli items. All warn of possible Listeria contamination. Here’s what to know.
Three U.S. companies have recalled their products due to Listeria risk. Albertsons is recalling different ReadyMeals and deli items, TreeHouse Foods has issued a recall for hundreds of frozen waffles, and Dakota Tom’s is recalling some hamburgers.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted three separate recall notices last week to inform the public. The FDA encourages consumers who bought these items not to eat them and to either throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
Albertsons Companies’ ReadyMeals & deli items
The food retailer has recalled 12 types of ReadyMeals and deli items due to a contaminated chicken ingredient from BrucePac, found by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
According to the recall notice on Saturday, these potentially contaminated ReadyMeals and deli items were sold at the following stores:
- Albertsons
- Carrs-Safeway
- Eagle
- Jewel-Osco
- Pavilions
- Randalls
- Safeway
- Shaw’s
- Star Market
- Tom Thumb
- Vons
The states potentially affected were Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming.
TreeHouse Foods’ frozen waffle products
Meanwhile, thousands of frozen waffles manufactured by TreeHouse Foods and distributed throughout the United States and Canada have been recalled due to a potential listeria contamination linked to the products.
The recalled products were sold at major retailers like:
- Albertsons
- Aldi
- Dollar General
- Foodhold
- HEB
- Kroger
- Publix
- Target
- Trader Joe’s
- Walmart
The full product list, which spans more than 10 pages, can be found here. As per the FDA, there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products to date.
Dakota Tom’s hamburgers
The FDA announced a recall on Friday for the Pepperjack Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger, and The Gambler. The recall is due to concerns about burger patties from the outside supplier BrucePac, which has also recalled its products over fears of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The affected sandwiches were sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, and other locations in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wyoming. The company assures consumers that they are “no longer using this ingredient from the ingredient supplier’s (BrucePac) impacted facility.”
What is Listeria monocytogenes?
Listeria is a harmful bacterium found in refrigerated, ready-to-eat foods like meat, poultry, seafood, and dairy products made from unpasteurized milk. It can also be found in produce harvested from soil contaminated with L. monocytogenes.
