I love starting my days with a giant mug of bulletproof coffee. The creamy and buttery flavor is just what my body needs to spring into action in the early hours of the morning.

Bulletproof coffee, keto coffee, fatty coffee, or whatever you choose to call it, has become quite popular in recent years because it contains a high amount of healthy saturated fats. It was discovered by a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley by the name of Dave Asprey.

While on his visit to Tibet in 2004, Dave stumbled upon yak butter tea. The tea had an instant effect on his mood which led him to dive into years of research until he came up with the perfect recipe. This recipe involved using mold-tested coffee as a replacement for tea and ghee or grass-fed butter as a substitute for yak butter.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at what makes bulletproof coffee so special and how to make it at home in a few, simple steps.

Bulletproof coffee, also known as butter coffee, is basically a combination of coffee, butter, and MCT oil (or coconut oil). The original recipe involves one part MCT oil and two parts butter, but over the years, it has undergone many variations.

The term ‘bulletproof coffee’ is now used to refer to any coffee that contains a lot of fat content. This fat can be obtained from a number of sources, including coconut milk, ghee, and heavy cream.

Ideally, you need three essential items to make bulletproof coffee – grass-fed butter, coconut (or MCT oil) and an immersion blender.

Grass-Fed Butter

Grass-fed butter is simply butter made from the milk of cows that have a diet of fresh grass. It’s known to have nutritional properties and a large amount of fat content, which makes it the perfect ingredient for this kind of coffee.

Coconut or MCT Oil

The only difference between coconut oil and MCT oil is that MCT oil is more concentrated. You can use either depending on your preference.

Immersion Blender

For the best results, you should use an immersion blender to make your bulletproof coffee because oil doesn’t mix with water that easily and you need to use some force to allow these two liquids to emulsify and turn into froth.

Making a bulletproof coffee is incredibly easy. All you need are a handful of ingredients and an immersion blender, and you’re good to go.

What You Need:

  • 2 tablespoons of grass fed butter (unsalted)
  • 2 tablespoons of MCT oil or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups of coffee

  1. To make bulletproof coffee, the first thing you need to do is brew 2 cups of your favorite brand of coffee. Once it’s done brewing, pour it into a large container to avoid spillage when you’re blending it.
  2. Add two tablespoons of unsalted grass fed butter, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (or coconut oil) to the coffee.
  3. If you want your coffee to turn out extra frothy and creamy, you can also add in about a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream.
  4. Mix the ingredients together with your immersion blender for about 45 to 60 seconds, or until you start to notice a frothy layer forming on the surface. Move your immersion blender up and down to make sure all the fat has been properly blended into the coffee.
  5. Once everything has been mixed together perfectly and the mixture has achieved the right consistency, pour it out into cups and serve.

If you don’t have an immersion blender at hand, you can always use a blender bottle, but make sure to give it a shake every few minutes so that all the fat is emulsified.

Tips to Make Your Bulletproof Coffee Extra Flavorful

Here are some tasty additions that can give your bulletproof coffee an extra kick of flavor.

Cacao Butter

If you want your coffee to have a subtle hint of chocolate, you can add a little bit of cacao butter to it in addition to grass fed butter. Cacao butter is an amazing source of saturated fats and will only make your coffee extra rich and buttery.

Sugar-Free Syrups

If you’re not a fan of unsweetened coffee, you can simply add flavored sugar-free syrups to it. A safe option would be to go with caramel as it works perfectly with the taste of butter.

Cinnamon Powder

Who doesn’t love the taste of cinnamon? Add a dash of cinnamon powder to enjoy your coffee with sweet and spicy undertones.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Keto?

The ketogenic diet has gained popularity over the last couple of years because ketones have been found to be a lot more efficient than glucose as fuel for the body. It’s a very strict diet that involves eating low-carb high-fat meals. Bulletproof coffee is keto because it’s a mixture of fats (MCT oil or organic coconut oil and butter) and coffee.

Final Words

If you’re thinking of starting a keto diet, then what better way to transition into it than incorporating the creamiest cup of coffee into your early morning routine?

You can choose to keep the flavors simple and classic, or add a little bit of cinnamon and cacao butter to it and take the flavor up a notch. All you need to do is set a couple of minutes aside in your day to make the perfect cup of bulletproof coffee at home.
