Egg Prices Are Expected to Continue Rising in 2025, According to USDA

“Ouch!”

Eggs are a staple in many American kitchens, but rising costs could make them harder to afford. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicted egg prices will keep rising in 2025 after a challenging year for the poultry industry.

Egg prices have already risen by an average of 7.7% in 2024, and the USDA forecasted a further increase of 11.4% next year. Agriculture Department economist Megan Sweitzer pointed to avian influenza as the primary driver of these price hikes.

“We’re still seeing egg-laying flocks being affected by the avian influenza. And so that’s going to contribute to be one of the most volatile categories,’ said Sweitzer.

Frustration among consumers is growing, with some taking to online forums to express their concerns. One Reddit user shared their experience, stating they hadn’t purchased eggs in a month and were shocked to see a dozen eggs priced at $4.22.

Other users joined the discussion, highlighting alternative solutions to high store prices. One commenter shared, “That’s why I started going to a private farm and getting mine. I get 2 dozen for $4. The stores are ridiculous!.”

Some suggested looking to farmers’ markets or raising chickens at home. “If you live in an area where there is a farmers market, go big them there. We are fortunate to have raise chickens.”

The USDA warned that if outbreaks persist, egg prices could continue to rise. However, if the situation improves and outbreaks subside, there may be a chance for prices to stabilize or even decline.
