Mojitos are a cheerful and light drink, but some of us aren’t big fans of rum. That is why we decided to come up with our version of the Tequila Mojito.
If you love the light flavor of lime and mint in your drink but aren’t a fan of rum, then this is the drink for you.
We quit drinking sodas a few years back. We became addicted to club soda and never looked back. Now we make all of our own club sodas with our Soda Stream, and at first, I planned to create this recipe with a splash of club soda.
However, the mojito with just club soda was missing something. The flair just wasn’t there for us. Then we had an idea.
We had some cans of Sprite leftover from the holidays. We decided to try adding a splash of the Sprite to the drink, and oh my goodness, it was delicious.
The key to making a fantastic Tequila Mojito is making your own minty sugar syrup. It is easy to make at home, and it is genuinely easy to do.
What you will need to make this lively drink:
- Water
- Ice cubes
- Sugar
- About 10 fresh mint leaves
- High-quality white tequila
- Cocktail shaker
- Wooden spoon
- Small sauce pot or high-sided pan with lid
- Stovetop
How to make minty simple syrup
Bring 1 cup of water and ¾ cup of sugar to boil in a small saucepan with the lid on.
(Stir it often so that the sugar doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.) Continue to boil for about 3 minutes or until the sugar fully dissolves.
Remove the pan from the heat. Remove the lid and place about 10 full mint leaves in the water.
Using a wooden spoon (we are in love with these gorgeous spoons), gently crush the mint leaves in the water.
Put the lid back on and allow the mixture to cool completely.
Yep, it really is that easy. This is enough simple syrup to make about six drinks.
Tips for this recipe:
- The quality of the tequila really does have an impact on the taste of this drink. Use as high a quality white (clear) tequila as you can afford.
- Creating your own homemade simple syrup infused with mint is the trick to this recipe.
- Consider making a pitcher of these and allowing mint leaves to float in the pitcher.
- The fresh lime juice will add a brighter flavor to this drink, but if you have a container of lime juice, don’t be shy about using it. (It is what I did.)
