Good news for eligible customers! Uber now accepts SNAP EBT payments for grocery orders.
In a major move to support food accessibility, Uber announced it will accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefits Transfer (SNAP EBT) payments. This allows eligible customers to use their benefits to order groceries from participating locations through the Uber Eats app.
Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) is an electronic system that allows Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants to pay for food using SNAP benefits.
This move aims to “expand access to more nutritious food for millions of Americans,” according to the ride-hailing company Uber.
“With this rollout, we are taking a significant step forward in ensuring that everyone has access to the fresh food they need, especially those without access to reliable transportation for whom food delivery can be a lifeline,” said Hashim Amin, Head of Grocery and Retail Delivery at Uber, North America.
To kick off the launch, Uber is offering EBT cardholders free delivery on their first three SNAP-eligible orders. EBT users who link their cards to the app can enjoy a free three-month Uber One membership, which includes unlimited free delivery and other perks.
Uber has partnered with the payments company Forage, which enables SNAP EBT payments on Uber Eats. “Partnering with Uber Eats will expand our ability to provide on-demand grocery delivery for even more SNAP shoppers across the United States,” said Ofek Lavian, co-founder and CEO of Forage.
Customers can browse a variety of SNAP-eligible groceries for delivery from nearby Albertsons, Safeway, Jewel-Osco, Vons, and Walgreens stores. Bryn Banuelos, senior director of strategic partnerships for Albertsons Cos., stated they are “proud to be the first retailer to accept SNAP payments through Uber Eats.”
The company added that it plans to expand its SNAP EBT payment options and partner with more retailers in the coming months.
