Ingredients

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 orange
  • 1 T whole cloves
  • 3-4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1 t ground allspice
  • 3 T real maple syrup

Instructions

  • Cut a square of cheesecloth and add all dry spices to the center. Tie tightly with cooking twine like a drawstring purse.
  • If you don't have cheesecloth and twine, it's ok to let all of the spices float freely while cooking, just strain off before serving.
  • Wash and dry the orange, then slice into "wheels". Remove and discard as many seeds that you can see.
  • Combine all ingredients in a 5 or 6-quart slow cooker. (If yours is smaller, use 1/2 gallon of cider and reduce spices by half.)
  • Cook on the lowest setting for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • If keeping warm throughout the day, check periodically and add a cup of water every five hours.
  • Strain spices and serve immediately.
  • To make into an adult beverage with alcohol, pour cider into mug and add a jigger of rum or whiskey to the mug right before serving. Stir and drink immediately.
