Cut a square of cheesecloth and add all dry spices to the center. Tie tightly with cooking twine like a drawstring purse.
If you don't have cheesecloth and twine, it's ok to let all of the spices float freely while cooking, just strain off before serving.
Wash and dry the orange, then slice into "wheels". Remove and discard as many seeds that you can see.
Combine all ingredients in a 5 or 6-quart slow cooker. (If yours is smaller, use 1/2 gallon of cider and reduce spices by half.)
Cook on the lowest setting for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.
If keeping warm throughout the day, check periodically and add a cup of water every five hours.
Strain spices and serve immediately.
To make into an adult beverage with alcohol, pour cider into mug and add a jigger of rum or whiskey to the mug right before serving. Stir and drink immediately.
