But, since I'm not really a chef I had a hard time choosing which one is the best for me and for what I need.

In fact, during my first try, I failed miserably because I didn't know that you shouldn't point the torch directly to the food and so my crème brûlé ended up tasting slightly off. This BonJour Chef’s kitchen torch looks as professional as any torch could ever look. I love how durable it looks and how easy it is to control. It also has a gauge so I’ll know how much gas I am using. This feature is certainly not present in most of the other torches I have tried in the past.

I also love that it has a stand. This way, I won’t have to worry about it falling or rolling while I am preparing the food to be torched. The best thing about this is that for all these features, it is still very affordable. In fact, the price is much lower than the price of most of the torches on this list.

Of course, even if I really loved this torch, there are a few things you should know before getting it. First, since it is very industrial looking, the body is quite big so those with smaller hands might have a hard time. It also slightly heavy and the lever to switch on the fire is a bit hard to handle sometimes.

PROS

  • It is very affordable.
  • It is very durable.
  • It has a built-in gauge and stand.

CONS

  • It is quite heavy so it’s a bit hard to control.
  • The lever and the body aren’t good for everyone.
  • Color: White and Silver
  • Type of gas: Butane
  • Material: Stainless Steel

I first stumbled upon JB Chef Micro Butane Torch while I was looking for a torch that wasn’t made of cheap plastic. I was immediately drawn by how stylish the torch looked and how well it fit in my hand. It was also very very safe to use which is something that I couldn’t say for a lot of the torches I have initially tried.

Most of the time the torches were either too fat or too uncomfortable to use to I dropped them a couple of times. This has never happened with this torch. The silver and white details also fit well in my modern kitchen.

This kitchen torch is fueled by butane gas. This makes it more convenient because butane is more available compared to the alternatives. The only downside to this beautiful torch is that it doesn’t come with the gas so it is quite inconvenient since you need to purchase it separately.

PROS

  • The chic design.
  • It was designed with functionality and comfort in mind.
  • It is very durable.

CONS

  • The butane gas needs to be bought separately.
  • Color: Silver
  • Type of Gas: Butane
  • Material: Stainless Steel

This LiBa kitchen torch is best for those who want something that’s more for function rather than style. I was honestly a bit apprehensive to get it at first because it did not look that appealing to me but a friend highly recommended it so when I needed to get a new torch I decided to buy this one.

I have to say that for the price, it functions really well. It did not need too much time to heat up and I really love that since I have tried torches before that would take forever just to fire up.Another thing I love about this is that it has 3 years warranty so you’re sure that you’re getting a quality item.

Despite this, I did come across some unwanted circumstances with this torch. The cap on the bottom sometimes falls off. This is not such a huge issue because it doesn’t really affect the functionality of the torch but it does get annoying.

PROS

  • It is very affordable.
  • It heats up very fast.
  • It has a 3 year warranty.

CONS

  • The bottom cap keeps on falling off.
  • It is not as stylish as the other torches.

  • Color: White and Orange
  • Type of Gas: Butane
  • Material: Stainless Steel

This Iwantani kitchen torch is a perfect tool for the outdoors. I usually bring this when we go camping for quickly roasted vegetables. The char that this gives the vegetables really adds a lot to that roasted flavor you want when you’re in the outdoors.

It flames up very quickly and there weren’t a lot of instances where I had the unwanted orange flame. It was also very easy to use to it was perfect for me since this was one of the first torches I have tried.

Of course, although it was great overall, it is not without its faults. The first thing I didn’t really like with this is that it looks like it was made for the outdoors. Now, there’s really nothing wrong with that per se but there’s nothing sleek or chic about it. Aside from this, I also started to have problems with starting it after a couple of weeks.

PROS

  • It is really great for the outdoors.
  • Creates a nice flame.

CONS

  • It is slightly pricier than the other torches.
  • It broke after just a couple of uses.
  • Color: Two colors available:black and red
  • Type of Gas: Butane
  • Material: Stainless Steel

If you want a more masculine design then this Xpert’s Flame kitchen torch is the one for you. I actually got this as a Father’s Day gift for my dad and he absolutely loves it. The torch has a gauge that allows you to control the intensity of the flame so you can adjust depending on the type of food that you're cooking.

Aside from this, its whole body is ergonomically designed to give a comfortable and efficient grip. This torch works well both indoors and outdoors and can give a great seat to steaks as well as a gentle char to desserts.

PROS

  • It has gauge to control the flame.
  • It is very comfortable to use.
  • The torch is very affordable.

CONS

  • Trouble with refilling.

What to Look For?

1. Ergonomically Designed

An item is ergonomically designed if it was designed with the efficiency and ease of use in mind. I remember using torches before that were poorly designed and caused a ton of redness and discomfort while I was using it. This is not only uncomfortable but it might also cause accidents.

If your grip on the torch is not good, it might end up slipping off your finger and that would be a huge problem especially if the torch is on.Torched which are ergonomically designed are just the right size to fit in the palm of your hand.

It would also have safeguards such as ridged handles or even non-slip handles. These won't just make torching safe for you but it would also give you better control so you can torch your food the way you want it.

2. Type of Gas used

For a lot of people, the type of gas in the rich is really unimportant. Whether it is butane, propane, or MAPP what matters most is that you know how to handle whatever gas you have. I personally prefer butane gas because it is the one that is readily available in the market.

This makes it easier for me to find refills and this also offers me more choices. In my experience, propane-fueled torches are also more prone to carbonization and yellow tips which I will discuss more in the next section.

3. Gas Capacity

Although most torches would have generally the same capacity, it is still more convenient if you get one which is long lasting. With this, you won't have to refill your torch over and over again which could be really inconvenient. But, of course, you must still check if the amount is safe enough for use.

It would also be best if you check if the gas for the torch you're getting is readily available in your area. What I also found to be very convenient is to look for torches that already have the gas included. There are also a few manufacturers that include refills with the package this will not only be more convenient it would also save you a couple of bucks.

4. Durability

When we're buying any product, its durability should be one of the first things we should check for. I have had my fair share of torches that suddenly stopped working after a couple of uses. For me, this isn't only very annoying, not to mention disappointing, but it could also be a safety hazard.

You wouldn't really know if there is something wrong with the starter to burn the gas and you also wouldn't know if it is already safe for disposal.Aside from this, it really is such a huge upset if you're already so excited to use your torch then all of a sudden it doesn't work at all.

It's also very embarrassing if you're showing it o friends or at parties and it doesn't work. This happened to me once and I can tell you that it's very very mortifying.

How to Use?

Using a kitchen torch might seem very after straightforward but it's not. Yes, it's easy as clicking a button but I what I found out is that there's a technique in order for you to have perfectly cooked food. The key to getting the most out of your torch is making sure that the flame is an oxidizing flame or that the tip of the flame is blue.

This signals that the temperature is just right and that your flame is not on too high. Oftentimes, we get really excited and but the flame up too high and we’ll get a yellow-orange tip. This is not good since it means that some hydrocarbons were not properly combusted so it might end up on your food.

I also notice a lot of people directly turning on the torch in front of the food. Honestly, this is how I used to do it as well it was something that I didn't really think about.

Now, I realize that by turning on the torch in front of the food some of the fuel might accidentally be transferred. Based on my experience, it's also better to adjust the flame away from the food so that it won't get too burnt.

The Verdict

After trying numerous torches, I have to say that my number one would have to be the one for Bonjour Chef’s. It has all the features you would need such as the gauge and the stand without breaking the bank. This is also very durable and is very comfortable to use.I hope you found this article helpful.
